These coasters were inspired by the holdfast guard shields from the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and were my first attempt at dabbling in product design. These were designed digitally first and executed in layers; first the basic shield shape was cut out, then a sheet of cardstock was etched with a wood grain texture using my vinyl cutter and laminated on top, and finally the hammered metal around the edges was sculpted with apoxie. The prototype was the molded and a great many shields were cold cast and polished for a metal look. Stencils were made for each individual shield and cut out with a vinyl cutter, then painted, weathered, and sealed.
